“We need to stand firm in our action path towards ocean health and sustainability. Oceans are a central part of the climate system and a source of resources for mankind. Today’s event is to draw attention to the fact that in June, Lisbon will be ocean” said the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Ricardo Serrão Santos, at the session to present the promotional video and debate on the UN Ocean Conference, to be held in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July, co-hosted by Portugal and Kenya.
“I don’t want to let this day go amiss, International Women’s Day, without a word to the huge importance of equality in the ocean sector. Sustainable Development Goal 4 (ODS 14)– Protect the oceans, sea, and marine resources – does not exist on it is own. All the goals are interconnected for a single purpose: a proposal of action for peace and prosperity for the planet and societies, in the present and in the future”, Ricardo Serrão Santos added on the implementation of SGD 14 on the UN Agenda 2030, which the conference will focus on.
During the session, held at the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute in Algés, and co-hosted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the promotional video was presented, which aims to trigger civil society’s interest in the conference and SDG 1: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, sea and marine resources for sustainable development”.
The conference programme and side events was presented by Alexandre Leitão from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the conference Organising Committee. The initiative also featured interventions by speakers from various areas of society: science, fisheries, blue economy, civil society, local government, and youth.
“Informed citizens will support the effective implementation of political decisions concerning our seas, based on the best available knowledge. To mobilise the scientific community, academic institutions, the private sector, NGOs, philanthropic, civic, youth and child associations, as well as the entire civil society and social partners is detrimental to the success of ocean action”, the Minister of Maritime Affairs reiterated.
The vent included messages from the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Peter Thomson.

Hospital de Braga acquired new ultrasound equipment, in an investment of around 55 thousand euros.
The new ultrasound scanner, which is installed in the Emergency Department, is part of a strategy of renovating and replacing more obsolete equipment and translates into an investment in innovation and technical differentiation with the aim of increasing response capacity in the area of imaging. .
This new equipment adds great support to the diagnosis of different pathologies in a hospital context, through a more simplified and faster workflow in which the choice of image has greater clinical acuity, in addition to faster and more accurate observation.
The reinforcement of this equipment in the Emergency Department also allows for greater comfort for users and clinicians, reducing, through this more modern technology, the time taken to carry out the clinical study and, consequently, possible states of greater anxiety on the part of users.
Portugal has closely and attentively followed the evolution of the situation in Ukraine, in close coordination with NATO and European Union partners, actively participating in international efforts to support the departure of Ukrainian and Portuguese-descendant citizens and welcome all those who choose our country as their destination.
In this sense, the Government launches today the platform «Portugal for Ukraine», available at www.portugalforukraine.gov.pt , which aims to bring together all the responses and ongoing actions with a view to supporting displaced people from Ukraine, inside and outside. of Portugal, in the dimensions of international action, the sending of humanitarian support and the integration and reception in Portugal. It contains information and support contacts related to coming to Portugal, transport, documentation, employment and training, education, health and housing.
The platform will allow the consultation of the various initiatives that are being carried out by the different Government Areas with responsibility for reception and integration, facilitating access to information by the user, and allowing them to prepare their trip to Portugal. .
«Portugal for Ukraine» also includes a list of questions and answers that contain general information and useful information about coming to Portugal and welcoming in the country, including an automated questionnaire that directs the request/offer of help to the entity best prepared to give answer to the problem presented.
The contents are available in Portuguese and English, and in the coming days there should also be a version in Ukrainian.
Portugal is available to welcome all displaced citizens of Ukraine who need international protection and who arrive in national territory.
